Prager Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics

Biography

Ryan Creedon is a Prager Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics and NSF Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow. Previously, he was an Acting Instructor for the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Washington, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2022. Prior to that, Ryan earned his M.S. in Applied Mathematics at the University of Washington in 2017, M.S. in Meteorology at Penn State University in 2016, and B.S. degrees in Mathematics and Meteorology from Penn State University in 2016. Ryan studies nonlinear waves in geophysical fluids, with emphasis on water waves and their various instabilities. He uses a combination of numerical and asymptotic methods together with rigorous techniques from functional analysis, pattern formation, and dynamical systems to investigate these instabilities. He is particularly interested in the application of hydrodynamic instabilities to problems of air-sea interaction and their potential role in how the atmosphere and ocean couple with each other in our climate system. In addition to research, Ryan enjoys teaching and was the recipient of the Boeing Award for Teaching in 2020, 2021, and 2023 during his tenure at the University of Washington.
